Grief, Loss & Life Transitions

Getting Help in Times of Grief, Loss & Bereavement

Providing Compassion and Dignity Through Change

Change is hard, even in the best of circumstances. Adjusting to major life transitions even when they are positive, can be difficult. Whether you are getting married, moving, changing jobs, having a child – or any of the other many transitions we can expect as part of life – coping and navigating the stress of a major change can cause depression and anxiety, evoke fear and confusion. If you are having trouble with accepting or adjusting to life's challenges, Dr. Holland can help you find healthy ways of coping. Life Transitions Therapy is also helpful for adults with serious, life-limiting medical illness, life-threatening illness as well as caregivers and those who are bereaved.

Grief, Loss & Bereavement

Grief is a natural response to loss, which manifests as emotional suffering commonly felt when something or someone we love is no longer in our lives. To many, the pain of loss can overwhelm everything in our lives. All kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions can arise, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt and deep sadness. The pain of grief can also disrupt physical health, making it a challenge to get enough sleep, eat, or concentrate. These are normal reactions to loss—and the more significant the loss, the more intense grief will be.

Grief is often painful, but for some people, the emotions can become overwhelming. When a person’s grief is severe and unrelenting, Dr. Holland can offer support. In time, a person can recover from their loss and adjust to a new life.

Each experience of grief is unique, complex, and personal. Grief may concern the death of a loved one, or it could involve a life change such as divorce or job loss. Your culture, personality, and experience can all affect the grieving process. Dr. Holland will tailor treatment to meet your specific needs.

Clients who are facing significant life changes and ongoing adjustment due to illness, acquired or traumatic injury, aging, functional loss and/or physical disability benefit most from Dr. Holland's Life Transitions therapy. She also works with people facing potentially terminal illness and the bereaved. Life Transitions Therapy is also beneficial for friends and family members of one who may be confronted with serious or terminal illness or injury, or friends and family of someone who has passed away after a long journey or sudden death.
